Murphy's Law

Murphy's Law : Everything that can go wrong will go wrong.
(but the cream still rises to the top).

Yo, from jump it seemed as though the performance was doomed to failure. Most of the audience didn't know what drama I went through before even hitting the stage.

1. Background singer and Musical Director - late.
Ricky got lost going to swoop DC in Pasadena. As a result, we miss sound check.

2. Drummer is a no show
I call his a$$ at 7p wondering where he is (at this point he too has missed sound check which was supposed to have been at 6:40). He tells me he's at rehearsal for his other band Castro. I tell him to hurry and get to BB Kings, which he never did. I got some pathetic email from him Monday morning with a lame as apology.

3. The Money was funny
Without going into details about tickets, ect. you just need to understand that the LA music scene is whack! Because unless you are the headliner, you've got to pay to play. Whether its a guruantee in ticket sales or a fee to participate... To make a long story short, I exceed expectations for ticket sales, but the cat who booked the gig was confused about what I owed the promoter. I thought something was funny about the situation, but writing another $250 check wasn't.

4. DC's keyboard went down right before the set.
Fortunately, I had to keyboard players in the band, so they played on the one working set of keys.

So I go on with no drummer - the promoters don't care. The sooner they can make it through the opening acts, the sooner the people can get to Raheem DeVaughn. Fortunately for me, Alex the base player knows one of the drummers from the other band, so he jumps in on Ain't Gonna Cry - about 1/3 of the way through my set.

The mix coming through my monitors was terrible - so I had to oversing my parts for fear that the audience couldn't hear me. I couldn't hear myself.

With all of that said and done - I had a great time. I had a lot of fun on stage and can't wait to do it again.

There are some photos posted in my albums. And video will be on myspace + youtube soon.

Special Thanks to FLR for holding me down. She's getting the hang of this manager thing...

Thanks for everyone who came out to support me. I hope you enjoyed the show and we plan to do it again real soon.
